At low tide, explore the natural rock flowerpots, tunnels and caverns sculpted from geological formations millions of years older than the Canadian Rockies.

As the tide turns and starts to flow once more, it can rise between 6 and 8 vertical feet per hour!  At the Hopewell Rocks, it is safe to explore the ocean's floor from 3 hours before low tide, to 3 hours after.

Low Tide at the Hopewell Rocks
High Tide at the Hopewell Rocks At high tide, spend a few hours kayaking around and through the Rocks, or visit the interpretive center to learn all about the geological, natural and human history of the Fundy Coast, or be entertained by the marvelous shorebirds, at roost on small strips of exposed beach.

It is the gravitational pull of the moon and the unique shape of the Bay that combine to create tides ranging from 32' to 46'.  You'll be truly amazed at how fast that water rises!

Shorebird Phenomenon

From mid-July until early August, hundreds of thousands of migrating shorebirds search the mudflats for food before continuing their long journey south. If you are really fortunate, you may be able to see them at high tide from a special viewing platform, or perhaps kayak through a cloud of them as they make their way to or from the beach. It is important to avoid disturbing the birds while they are resting, as they must reserve strength for the journey south.

Wander the network of walking trails, linger on the lookouts, or learn all about the Fundy tides at the Interpretation Center. Gift shop, Restaurant and Snack Bar facilities also available.

The entrance to the park is on the upper level of the site, so be prepared for a 15 to 20 minute walk down a wide, graveled trail to the viewing area and beach. If you feel you are unable to walk the trail, transportation is available for a nominal fee.

Entrance Rates & Season of Operation

The Hopewell Rocks Tidal Exploration Site is open seasonally from May through to October.

Day passes are good for the whole day, so you should plan to make a visit at both high and low tide in order to fully appreciate the depth and breadth of the Fundy Tides. There is approximately 6 hours difference between a high and low tide.

Small tidepools left by the receding waterDon't forget to check the Tide Tables before you visit! You may safely walk the ocean floor from three hours before low tide until three hours after low tide.

Telephone 1-800-561-0123 or visit the official Hopewell Rocks Website for more information and to check the hours of operation.
